Travel Information
British Columbia, like all other provinces and territories in Canada, uses the Canadian dollar currency. While the American dollar is accepted throughout most of British Columbia it is recommended that visitors exchange their foreign money at a bank or exchange institution. Major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are also accepted widely throughout the province.
The climate in British Columbia is largely influenced by the region's mountainous topography and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The diversity of landscape causes wide variations in weather patterns causing average rainfall, snowfall and temperatures to differ significantly over short distances. Generally however, the coast of British Columbia is well known for having the most pleasant climate in Canada.
Time Zone:
British Columbia is in the Pacific Time Zone, which is 8 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. Like most provinces in Canada, Daylight Savings Time is observed in BC, meaning that time is shifted forward by one hour in the spring and back again in the fall.
Lying between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky mountains, British Columbia spans 947,797 square km (365,973 square miles), nearly two and a half times the size of Japan, and four times the size of Great Britain. Approximately three quarters of the province is dedicated to mountain ranges and forested regions allowing for over 650 provincial parks and recreation sites. East of British Columbia is the province of Alberta. Bordering the province to the north is the Alaskan panhandle and the northern Canadian territories. And to the south, the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana.
